Homemade Hair Detangler

I recently ran out of my store bought, name brand, full of chemicals hair detangler that I used on my oldest daughter who has pretty long hair. These are all the chemicals in the stuff I used to use:

Yuck. I looked up information about these ingredients:
  • Sodium Benzoate, which is used as a preservative, has shown non-reproductive organ toxicity in some studies.
  • Dimethicone and Trisiloxane, which are conditioners, have also shown non-reproductive organ toxcity.
  • Laureth-4 is an antistatic that can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, and lungs.
Of course, all of these ingredients have been approved to be used in cosmetics and food applications. Also, all of the ingredients that I didn't list weren't studied enough yet to provide information, so who knows what kind of problems they can cause.

So, I'm not buying hair detangler anymore. I'm making my own, out of two simple ingredients:
  1. one part of pure vegetable glycerine
  2. five parts of water
That's it! To make your own, just combine these ingredients and add to a spray bottle.

To use your new detangler:
  1. Spray generously over wet hair and towel dry.
  2. Comb through the hair, and you're done!

I use this on both of my girls and it works just as well as the store bought stuff.

Before spraying homemade detangler...what a mess!

After using homemade detangler...nice and smooth!

Very sleek after the hair was dry!

  2. Who knew you can make your own detangler? Thanks. I'll make it when I use up the bottle I just purchased. Maybe even sooner!

  3. I have really long, thick hair and have been wanting to make my own haircare products but was leery because I was afraid of a tangled mess. This is perfect, thank you for sharing! I pinned it :)

  6. Great recipe. Super simple. Love that. I have made detangler before but it had 6 or 7 ingredients. Gonna give this a go.
